Cell C Fixed LTE Services

There have been some articles published in the press regarding Cell C terminating Fixed Wireless LTE services.

We’d like to clarify a few important points for clients who make use of this service via Afrihost.

How Load Shedding May Affect Your Vumatel Connection

Load shedding is currently being implemented by Eskom across South Africa, and could continue well in April this year. The frequency of load-shedding varies according to the severity set by Eskom. Although there are some schedules in place, the reality is that load-shedding can happen at any time :(

When load-shedding occurs, thousands of VUMA clients lose their connection. When the power comes back, they have to re-authenticate in order get connected again. This means that their CPE device (the little white box mounted to the wall) must log into the VUMA system again. However, when thousands of people try to login at the same time, it has a crippling effect on the systems that govern the network. Think of it like thousands of people trying to enter a store on Black Friday - something is bound to break :(
